Chuck Schumer speaks on vaccine crisis

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is demanding that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. declare a nationwide emergency over the sharp rise in measles cases — the worst outbreak in 33 years.

In a letter dated July 11, Schumer accused Kennedy of dismantling public health protections, fueling anti-vaccine rhetoric, and causing a collapse in trust toward lifesaving immunization efforts.

According to the CDC, measles cases have soared to 1,288 across 39 states, with most cases occurring among unvaccinated children and teens. Three deaths have been reported in 2025 alone.

Kennedy has drawn sharp criticism for firing all 17 members of the vaccine advisory panel and replacing them with known vaccine skeptics. He has also removed the COVID-19 vaccine from the list of recommended immunizations for children and pregnant women.

Health experts have warned that Kennedy’s actions are dangerous and irresponsible. Critics, including lawmakers like Sen. Patty Murray, are calling for public hearings and stricter oversight.

Despite scientific consensus that the measles vaccine is 97% effective when both doses are taken, RFK Jr. has promoted alternative treatments and questioned the vaccine’s long-term efficacy — claims refuted by medical authorities.

The outbreak's epicenter lies in parts of New Mexico and Texas, where low vaccination rates in certain communities have made populations especially vulnerable.

With public health on the line, the debate continues: Should political leaders promote science-backed medicine or allow personal beliefs to override national safety?
