Protest at the Supreme Court over Trump’s citizenship policy

In a landmark ruling on Friday, the US Supreme Court gave former President Donald Trump a sweeping victory, limiting the power of lower courts to block presidential executive orders — and opening the door for dramatic policy moves such as ending birthright citizenship.

Calling it a “monumental victory for the constitution,” Trump announced that his controversial order ending automatic citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants will take effect in one month. The ruling, however, allows legal challenges to proceed in individual states.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett, writing for the majority, acknowledged states may seek broader injunctions based on administrative or financial burdens. The decision sets up a new wave of legal challenges across the country.

Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that the Supreme Court will review the matter again in October, potentially deciding the long-term fate of birthright citizenship in the United States.

Friday’s ruling also strengthens the executive branch by limiting federal judges’ ability to issue nationwide injunctions — a tool often used to block Trump-era policies in the past, from immigration to foreign aid cuts.

Trump told reporters, “We can now properly proceed with policies that were wrongly blocked,” citing dozens of instances where courts halted White House actions. The decision could empower not only Trump but future presidents of either party.

As legal experts anticipate more lawsuits, the decision already reshapes the balance of power between the judiciary and the executive branch — with huge implications for US immigration policy and presidential authority.
